After Patrick Jane have a face to face with his greatest nemesis, killing him in the end of season 3, he got in prison and now on the 4th season of The Mentalist, he must prove that the man he shot was really the notorious serial killer, Red John. In the meantime, Lisbon urges Van Pelt to seek counseling in the aftermath of the death of her fiance.
