At 435 pounds and just 27 years old, Nyla has plus-sized personality, but a lifelong struggle with her weight. Though she lives in Houston, she loves the food of Louisiana and orders ten pounds of crawfish at her favorite restaurant, when she receives the shock of her life. The waitress brings over a t-shirt emblazoned, "I ate 10 pounds of crawfish and all I got was a year with Chris Powell." To her delight, she has been selected for a year-long makeover with the transformation specialist and trainer, but Nyla's joy is tempered along the way. Though she is bubbly and appears confident, her obesity masks her insecurities about never having had a relationship with her biological father. In addition, she didn't realize the hard work and tireless commitment she would need to put into her weight loss efforts, and she clashes repeatedly with Chris, defying his dietary recommendations and confronting him angrily. As he continues to try to motivate her, Chris realizes he needs to help Nyla find closure with her dad and provides an amazing on-camera opportunity for a new beginning.
